Is My Liver Important?
When it comes to overall health, your liver plays a starring role in keeping you vibrant and thriving. This unassuming organ quietly works behind the scenes, performing over 500 functions that are essential for your well-being.
Your liver is your body's natural detox powerhouse.
Every minute, it processes about 1.4 liters of blood, filtering out toxins, metabolizing nutrients, and producing bile to aid digestion. It has SO many roles when it comes to our health:
- Detoxification
- Nutrient Metabolism
- Hormone Balance
- Immune Support
- Vitamin and Mineral Storage
Your liver is resilient, but it can get overwhelmed. Signs that it might need support include:
- Fatigue or brain fog
- Digestive issues like bloating
- Skin problems such as acne or dullness
- Hormonal imbalances
- Difficulty losing weight
Your liver works tirelessly for you, so showing it some consistent love can yield incredible results. Better digestion, glowing skin, and balanced energy levels are just a few of the benefits of a happy liver!
Your Liver is a Detoxifying Powerhouse
The liver is your body's primary detoxifier, responsible for filtering and neutralizing toxins, chemicals, and waste products from the blood.
As blood flows through the liver, it is filtered by specialized cells that break down harmful substances and convert them into less toxic forms. These are then either excreted through bile or removed from the body via urine.
The liver also processes medications, alcohol, and metabolic byproducts, ensuring that harmful substances do not accumulate and disrupt your body's systems.
By supporting these detoxification functions, the liver helps maintain internal balance, reduce the burden of toxins, and protect overall health.
When the liver is overwhelmed or impaired, its ability to detoxify slows, leading to a buildup of toxins that can affect energy, digestion, and immune function.
Your Liver Breaks Down and Absorbs Food
The liver is essential for breaking down and absorbing food.
This vital organ manages the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, ensuring that your body gets the fuel it needs to function efficiently.
When you consume carbohydrates, your liver processes them into glucose, the body's primary energy source. It regulates blood sugar levels by storing excess glucose as glycogen and releasing it back into the bloodstream when energy demands increase, such as during exercise or between meals.
This balancing act prevents blood sugar spikes and crashes, keeping your energy steady throughout the day.
The liver is equally important in fat metabolism. It breaks down dietary fats into fatty acids, which can be used for immediate energy or stored for later.
The liver also produces bile, a substance essential for digesting and absorbing fats in the small intestine.
Additionally, it synthesizes cholesterol and lipoproteins, which transport fats through the bloodstream to cells that need them.
Protein metabolism is another critical function of the liver. It processes amino acids from the protein you eat, using them to build and repair tissues, produce enzymes, and create other important compounds like hormones.
During this process, the liver removes harmful byproducts, such as ammonia, and converts them into urea, which is safely excreted by the kidneys.
Your Liver Regulates Metabolism
Your liver is the control center for your body's metabolism. We just talked about how it breaks down each macronutrient into smaller pieces that your body can absorb and utilize.
Because it breaks down our foods, the liver plays a role in metabolism and fat burning. This is a cycle where our habits and diet affect our liver, which then does the metabolizing of our food and stores or sends glucose, cholesterol, and amino acids to be utilized. And our liver health affects its ability to do those things!
In addition to nutrients and food, the liver also regulates the metabolism of other important substances, such as cholesterol and hormones.
Cholesterol is a necessary component of health (we'll get into more in a bit!), and the liver is the key player for creating, metabolizing, storing, and releasing cholesterol. These processes are crucial for our health! We need cholesterol to create cell membranes and hormones. And hormones are absolutely necessary.
Your liver uses cholesterol to make hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and even thyroid hormone! The liver then regulates hormone levels and breaks down excess hormones, keeping your body's systems in harmony. And we all know that our hormones run the show! (But that's another topic for another day…)
A healthy liver ensures that these metabolic processes run smoothly, providing your body with energy, maintaining balance, and supporting cellular repair.
Your Liver Helps Control Blood Flow
The liver is vital for regulating blood flow and maintaining proper circulation throughout your body.
Every minute, approximately one-quarter of your body's blood flows through the liver, where it is filtered and processed. This ensures that harmful substances like toxins, bacteria, and old red blood cells are removed before the blood circulates back to the heart and the rest of your body.
The liver also acts as a blood reservoir, storing significant amounts of blood and releasing it into circulation as needed.
This function is particularly important during times of physical stress, injury, or blood loss, when the body requires an immediate boost in blood supply to maintain adequate pressure and oxygen delivery to vital organs.
The liver also produces key proteins, like albumin, that play a critical role in maintaining the osmotic balance of blood, ensuring that fluids remain within the vessels and don't leak into surrounding tissues.
Additionally, the liver synthesizes clotting factors that prevent excessive bleeding and support the healing process when injuries occur.
So, it's just a tiny bit important…
And a healthy liver is a little bit essential for maintaining balanced and efficient blood flow.
When the liver becomes compromised, whether by disease, toxins, or lifestyle factors, its ability to regulate circulation can diminish, potentially leading to issues like fluid retention, blood clotting disorders, or reduced oxygen delivery to tissues.
Supporting liver function is crucial to ensuring optimal blood flow and overall circulatory health–and many other things!
Your Liver Stores Vitamins and Minerals
We are hearing more and more how minerals and vitamin stores play a role in almost every area of health, and the liver is a key player for this!
Your liver acts as a natural reservoir for the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs to function properly. It stores fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, as well as vitamin B12, so that you have a steady supply of them. These nutrients play critical roles in everything from bone health and vision to immune support and energy production.
Minerals such as iron and copper are also stored in the liver. Iron is vital for oxygen transport in the blood, while copper helps maintain healthy connective tissues and supports enzyme function.
By managing these vitamin and mineral reserves, your liver ensures your body has the resources it needs to carry out its day-to-day functions, particularly during times of increased demand, like illness or stress.
There are many ways to add vitamins and minerals to your routine, but our absolute favorite way is with NingXia Red.
One small step with a big (and delicious!) impact. Who doesn't want that?
NingXia Red is a nutrient-dense superfruit drink that is packed with antioxidants from wolfberries, blueberries, cherries, and pomegranates. This one supplement reduces oxidative stress, floods your body with vitamins and minerals, improves energy levels and sleep, and decreases stress. It is the nourishment your liver (and body!) needs.
Your Liver Manages Cholesterol
Your liver plays a central role in managing cholesterol, an essential fat that your body needs for building cells, producing hormones, and aiding digestion.
While cholesterol is often associated with diet, the majority of it is actually produced by your liver. The liver carefully balances cholesterol levels, ensuring your body has enough to function while preventing excess that could lead to health issues.
The liver produces and regulates two types of cholesterol:
- LDL (low-density lipoprotein), often labeled "bad cholesterol": LDL carries cholesterol to cells that need it, but when levels are too high, it can build up in the arteries. There is some debate as to what is a healthy level of LDL, but we do know that we don't want it to be too high.
- HDL (high-density lipoprotein), known as "good cholesterol”: HDL transports excess cholesterol back to the liver, where it is broken down and eliminated from the body.
The liver uses cholesterol to produce bile, a substance essential for digesting and absorbing fats. This process is key for nutrient absorption and also helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels throughout the body.
When the liver becomes burdened by poor diet, toxins, or unhealthy lifestyle habits, its ability to regulate cholesterol can falter.
And while we do need cholesterol in our bodies, we have to keep a healthy balance! Showing our liver some love allows it to keep that balance maintained so we can thrive.
Your Liver Supports Your Immunity
Your liver is actually your first line of defense when it comes to immunity!
The liver filters your blood to catch and neutralize harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and toxins before they can spread throughout your body. Specialized immune cells in the liver, called Kupffer cells, patrol for invaders and help destroy them, ensuring your immune system remains vigilant and effective.
Your liver also produces proteins that are critical for immune function, such as complement proteins. These aid in identifying and attacking harmful microbes while supporting your body's natural, healthy inflammatory response to infections.
A healthy liver ensures that all of these immune puzzle pieces fit together seamlessly. This means you are protected from disease, recover quickly when exposed, and don't fall prey to chronic inflammation that can compromise immunity.
When your liver is overwhelmed by diet, toxins, alcohol, or stress, its ability to support your immune system tanks. This can leave your body vulnerable to infections and slow down recovery time.
Supporting your liver through mindful health choices not only enhances detoxification but also fortifies your immune defenses, creating a strong foundation for overall well-being.

A quick word on Golden Turmeric…
The active compound in turmeric is curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Curcumin has been widely studied for its ability to reduce inflammation at a molecular level by blocking the activity of certain inflammatory enzymes (such as COX-2). In fact, curcumin blocks these enzymes as well as conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)!
(Pssst, those NSAIDS and OTC pain relievers are also SO hard on the liver!)
Golden Turmeric has all these benefits, plus it has better absorption than any other turmeric supplement. This supplement powder is infused with essential oils and tastes great!
Your Liver Loves a Healthy Diet
Let's nourish the liver with food!

- Beets and Carrots: Packed with antioxidants, these veggies support bile production.
- Garlic and Onions: Their sulfur compounds boost detoxification enzymes.
- Healthy Fats: Avocados, nuts, and seeds provide essential fatty acids that support liver function
- Antioxidants: Antioxidants protect cells from oxidative stress and reduce inflammation overall. They are great for liver love!
- Lemon: Add Lemon Vitality to your water to stimulate liver function and aid digestion. The vitamin C also helps the liver produce enzymes essential for detoxification.
When it comes to antioxidants, there is no better option than NingXia Red!
NingXia Red is a delicious supplement drink that combines wolfberries (goji berries) with other antioxidant-rich fruits like blueberries, cherries, and pomegranates. It also contains Lemon, Orange, and Yuzu essential oils.
This one supplement is packed with vitamins, minerals, and especially high levels of antioxidants, such as zeaxanthin. Your liver loves it!
And if you want a really easy button for liver nourishment, grab some JuvaPower + JuvaTone!
JuvaPower is a nutrient-rich powder supplement that combines the benefits of spinach, rice, and beets with essential oils like fennel and anise to promote gentle cleansing and healthy liver function.
Its sidekick is JuvaTone, a tablet that pairs phytonutrients and essential oils, including Lemon, German Chamomile, Rosemary, and more. These two supplements will truly show your liver some love!
Your Liver Loves Clean Water
If there's one simple yet powerful way to show your liver some love, it's by staying hydrated with clean, pure water. Your liver is your body's detox champion, and water is its trusty sidekick.
Water is essential for life–and your liver! You liver needs water to…
- Flush out toxins. Without enough hydration, these toxins can linger in your body, making your liver work overtime.
- Produce bile: Bile fluid is essential for breaking down fats and aiding digestion.
- Reduce the burden on the liver: When your body is dehydrated, your kidneys struggle to filter waste, so the burden moves to the liver.
- Absorb nutrients: Water is essential to break down and transport nutrients.
BUT, if you drink a ton of plain water… you are actually still dehydrated!
We need water with minerals–sodium, selenium, zinc, and many others. This is why salt packets and electrolytes have become so popular.
And we have an even better option than any of those–Mineral Essence!
Mineral Essence is different from other mineral supplements because it contains ionic minerals–minerals in their broken apart form. This means they are easily and readily absorbed and don't have to be broken apart in the gut!
So grab your water, add some Lemon or Grapefruit Vitality and sip throughout the day. Then, grab your Mineral Essence and take it in the morning or throughout the day!
Your Liver Loves Movement
Movement is one of the simplest and effective ways to support your liver!
Exercise improves your circulation, which gives the liver a fresh supply of oxygen-rich blood. This helps it perform its essential detoxification tasks more efficiently. Movement also stimulates the lymphatic system, aiding in the removal of toxins and metabolic waste that your liver works hard to process.
Exercise plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy weight, which is crucial for liver health. Excess fat, particularly around the abdomen, puts extra strain on the liver and reduces its ability to function.
By staying active, you help regulate metabolism, reduce fat accumulation, and support your liver's overall health!
And we're not talking intense, Cross-fit games style workouts (unless that's your thing!). Even gentle forms of movement, like walking or yoga can do wonders for your liver!
Activities that stimulate the core, such as twists in yoga or diaphragmatic breathing during Pilates, can gently massage the liver, encouraging better blood flow and bile production.
Regular exercise and sweating (through a sauna or workout) can go a long way to boost and support your liver's detoxification efforts!
Start today…
Here is what you can do right now to show your liver some love through movement!
- Jump. When you wake up in the morning, jump 100 times. This stimulates lymphatic flow and gets your blood circulating.
- Walk. Turn on a podcast, grab a friend, or just be silent and present–and walk! Make a goal of 10,000 steps a day (they don't have to be all at once!)
- Twist. Grab a yoga mat and do some simple twists. You don't have to be super flexible either. Just start!
Your Liver Loves Reducing Alcohol, Sugars and Toxins
Your liver's main job is to process and eliminate harmful substances from your body, so when alcohol, refined sugars, and environmental toxins build up, the liver gets overwhelmed.
Alcohol is one of the liver's biggest challenges–it forces the liver to prioritize breaking down alcohol over other vital functions like metabolizing nutrients and detoxifying the blood.
Sugars, particularly refined ones, also place a heavy burden on the liver. When you consume high amounts of sugar, your liver converts the excess into fat. This process can contribute to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition that compromises the liver's ability to function.
Similarly, processed foods laden with additives, colorants, and artificial chemicals introduce unnecessary toxins that make the liver must work harder.
Environmental toxins–pollutants, pesticides, and household chemicals–further complicate matters. These accumulate in your body over time, putting additional strain on your liver's already demanding workload.
Reducing your exposure to these substances allows your liver to work more efficiently and focus on what matters most—keeping your body balanced and healthy.
To show your liver some love today, try these simple yet effective steps:
- Drink plenty of filtered water with minerals to help flush out toxins.
- Replace sugary treats with naturally sweet fruits like berries or apples. Opt for natural sweeteners like maple syrup, honey, or sucanat when sweetener is needed.
- Opt for organic produce to reduce pesticide exposure. Grab some Thieves Fruit + Veggie Wash to remove pesticide residue from your produce.
- Limit alcohol to occasional consumption or eliminate it altogether for a liver reset. Forgoing alcohol for at least 30 days does wonders for your liver!
- Use natural cleaning products and plant-based personal care items to reduce toxin exposure in your environment.
- Consider a castor oil liver pack. There is a lot of great information out there on the benefits of castor oil packs!
By making these small but impactful changes, you empower your liver to work at its best, ensuring your overall health and vitality.
